Butter tea is a staple in the diet of the Changpa, and is consumed throughout the day and especially with guests. The thick drink is made from goat milk, and supplements a diet of meat, barley, Chang (a homemade barley wine), salt, butter, and cheese. Alcohol has a strong grip on the nomadic community, and alcoholism is a growing problem for the Changpa. When trucks from Southern India arrive periodically to bring staples such as propane, rice, and clothing, they usually bring liquor along as well.
